The Two Doctors

My son is with me this week, and tonight we watched two "doctor" shows that he loves: Doctor Who and House. Doctor Who is the new version of the ancient British TV series, this time a co-production of the BBC and CBC (I don't know if my American friends can see it). It seems to have managed to retain the feel of the original, but I don't know if that's a good thing or not. Probably is.

House is good too, but I don't have a lot of empathy for Hugh Laurie's "Dr. House" character. A great dramatic turn from a man with a large body of light comic work though. I loved him all those years ago in Blackadder and Jeeves And Wooster. My preferred medical show lately has been Grey's Anatomy. Mainly because Ellen Pompeo looks so good in scrubs...

Keeping with pop culture, I've finally got around to reading The Da Vinci Code. It's a page turner alright, but I have to say it was pretty formulaic and idiotically complicated. It's like the layers of an onion, but with nothing in the middle! No doubt it will make a blockbuster movie.

In other news, literally, I turned on the TV last night to see the lead item on the national news was a massive chemical fire within sight of my parent's house. Funny how your evening can suddenly flip upside down like that. I called instantly, and found them at home and safe. Not too close, up wind, etc. Yike.

Listening to: I Think Of You by Ivy from Long Distance. A wistful little song that I've loved for a while and popped up on the last episode of Grey's Anatomy.

  1. I tried to read the Da Vinci Code, I really did. Waited months for it to come into the library when I worked there. Finally, it arrived and I took it home, full of joyous glee. A week later I returned it because after the first three chapters I realized it just wasn't doing it for me. At all.

    Feh.

  2. Your problem is that you have no stick-to-itiveness! Actually I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, so I agree with you. I lost interest about half way through The Da Vinci Code. I just have a habit of plowing through books once I've started them.
