Uh-oh
"This is essentially a war in which intelligence is absolutely key to success" Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said today. Could the Bush administration be finally recognising that they're not equipped to achieve victory in Iraq? :-)
Rice was actually responding to reports that America has established "a network of secret Soviet-era prisons in Eastern Europe where detainees may have been harshly treated." Presumably these detainees are being taken to locations where American interrogators aren't constrained by their own laws against torture in order to extract information. (Why transport them otherwise?)
This seems to undermine everything that the Americans claim to be fighting for, but it does fit with the Bush administration's pattern of ill-considered expediency. You know; the old one step forward, two steps back thing...
