Wishful Thinking
Sunday night my eleven year old son and I watched a two hour Animal Planet special called Dragons. Done in the style of Walking with Dinosaurs, it featured lots of realistic special efffects and re-enactments. The plot centred around the fictional discovery of a mummified dragon in the Carpathian mountains. According to the narrator, dragons were driven to extinction in medieval times. All done "straight".
At the end of the show Chris phoned his mother to ask her something, and while they were talking he told her "They found a mummified dragon in the Carpathian mountains!" I had to burst his bubble and tell him that it was all "imaginary". His reaction? "Damn!"
Also, today was Chris' Grade Six graduation. A sweltering hot gymnasium packed with parents, a bag-pipe precession, the Principal's address (mostly excerpted from Oh, The Places You'll Go!), a valedictorian speech by a boy named Tyler (mumbled quietly, but with apparent conviction), the presentation of graduation scrolls, etc. Then the gym was converted into a dance floor for the kids and parents were banished.
Chris still has the digital camera, it will be interesting to see what he's got on it!
Update: Chris' camera was full of blurry shots of classmates running around, and also short video clips of the same. He did take a few photos of the school playground though, where he spent many a lunch hour contemplating life...
